The Flip 6 isn’t the biggest, loudest speaker on our list, nor is it the most affordable. While occasionally it can mask some instruments in the mix, it provides a plucky performance that will turn heads. There's enough thump to make even the most bass-heavy music genres sound great, yet enough care and articulation for jazz, acoustic music, podcasts, or just about anything else you can throw its way. The Flip 6's rounded chassis and bass radiators provide clear and powerful sound that's ideal for bouncing off the surface of a sparkling swimming pool. As such, the more JBL speakers you buy, the bigger the party you can support. JBL's PartyBoost feature allows you to link up to 100 JBL speakers over Bluetooth, though we've never tested that many to be clear. The Flip 6 also adds a more efficient Bluetooth standard (5.1), and a slightly tweaked design (though you'll hardly notice a difference over the Flip 5). It also improves on its predecessor with slightly smoother sound and increased durability securing an IP67 dust and water resistance rating to protect against dust and even a quick dunk. The JBL Flip 6 brings all the same great features of its predecessors: room-filling sound a water-resistant design that makes it perfect for outdoor use 12 hours of playback time and a massive range of color options. JBL's Flip line of Bluetooth speakers is an awesome choice for more affordable fun. While it isn't cheap, if you want a portable speaker that does it all-and sounds darn good doing it-the Roam is the way to roll. Because this is a Sonos speaker, you’ll also get convenient Wi-Fi setup and control via the Sonos S2 app. During testing, we also found the Roam's wireless Bluetooth range to be substantial-we were able to nearly walk the length of an entire practice field before it started to cut out. The speaker's 10 hours of playback time is mid-tier but more than enough battery life for a day outing. The armored front grille keeps the interior safe and its IP67 dust and water resistance rating means it can survive dusty environments or even a quick dunk-something we don’t expect from a Wi-Fi speaker. It also fits perfectly in a backpack water bottle holster. The Roam's soft-yet-grippy exterior feels good in your hand, as does the speaker’s balanced weight of just under a pound. What's more, its True Volume feature (iOS only) adapts the audio to your environment, ensuring that your music always sounds its best. The Roam's bass response won't keep up with bigger sound tubes like Ultimate Ears’ hefty Megaboom 3, nor does it have the same 360-degree sound field, but it's also a lot easier to take on the road. From the moment we pressed play, we were impressed by not only how good it sounds, but also how big. The Roam offers warm, smooth sound with great detail and way more bass response than you’d expect from a six-inch tube. This additional connectivity not only provides improved sound fidelity, but also allows the Roam to double as a smart speaker for Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant, as well as connect to other Sonos speakers as part of a multi-room setup. It works great on the go, no doubt, but unlike other speakers on this list, it can connect to your music source over Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. The Sonos Roam is the most versatile portable speaker we've ever tested.
